The 2017 Survey of Formal Education covers key data for the school year ending in 2016 required for the monitoring of international and national education goals.

Following the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) is working closely with Member States and partners to develop new indicators, statistical approaches and monitoring tools to better assess progress towards the SDG 4 education targets while making every effort to minimise the reporting burden on countries.

As part of this work, key information required for the monitoring of SDG 4, such as school resources, teachers, and information communication technology (ICT) in education, have been integrated in the Students and Teachers questionnaire.

We have also updated the questionnaire on National Education Systems to better reflect national policies on free and compulsory education. We have made minor changes to the questionnaire on Educational Expenditure. The Tertiary Education questionnaire remains unchanged.

The deadline for submitting data is 15 May 2017. Country-level data and indicators from the survey will be released in December 2017 via UIS.Stat. Regional and global results for the school year ending in 2016 will be released in May 2018.

A timely response to this survey is essential to produce high-quality, cross-nationally comparable data and indicators, which are used to monitor and report on international development goals related to education, including the education goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These statistics are used widely by countries, international and regional organizations, the media, academics and students.
