Overall education funding mechanisms

Definition

Resource allocation mechanisms from the central to lower tiers of government (or to schools) mainly to cover salaries and operational needs. In decentralized systems, the budget is allocated based on the school-age population and a unit cost per student; these allocations may be adjusted, taking factors such as poverty and location into account, to promote equity. In more centralized systems, specific budget line items may specifically address the education needs of disadvantaged groups.
