The UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) has just updated its global database on research and experimental development (R&D) with more recent country-level data to monitor progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on industry, innovation and infrastructure.

The UIS is the official data source for SDG target 9.5, which calls on countries to encourage innovation and substantially increase the number of researchers, as well as public and private spending on R&D. UIS data on women in science are also used for cross-cutting themes related to SDG 5 on gender equality.

The release includes:

  • new data for 45 countries
  • updated time series data and regional averages for 2017 for SDG 9.5 indicators on the human and financial resources invested in R&D as well as the share of women researchers and other key indicators.

The UIS will release the final data set for the 2018 reference year in June.
