Every September, the UIS updates its education data, making it more comprehensive and detailed. This includes data collected regularly from UIS surveys of national authorities, household surveys, learning assessments, and UIS partners. In the 2024 Education Data Release you will find new data covering both country-level specifics and regional averages for selected SDG 4 indicators and Other Policy Relevant Indicators (OPRI).
Expansion of data points and data coverage
- In this release the UIS added 235,596 national data points to its database, comprising 54% SDG indicators and 46% OPRI indicators.
- Most data points were added for the year 2022 (21%), followed by 2023 (20%), 2021 (8%). However, in some cases data are available for year 2024 already!
- Indicators with the greatest increase in data points include SDGs, 4.1.2, 4.1.4, 4.3.1 and 4.4.3.
- Coverage of indicator 4.3.1 on adult participation in formal and non-formal education has expanded to 200 countries.
- Data on learning outcomes for the Pacific region has been significantly expanded, with the integration of The Pacific Islands Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (PILNA) data into the UIS database.
New indicator series
- For this release, indicator 4.1.1 on learning proficiency in the early grades is now disaggregated into two indicator series for grades 2 and grade 3.
- Modelled data on completion rates and out of school rates are disseminated as distinct indicator series, allowing users to browse complete country time series.
- Regional averages for indicator 4.3.1 are disseminated for the first time.
- Data on adult literacy by household wealth is now available, with estimates of literacy rates for the poorest and richest households disseminated.
- Data on graduates by field of study are now sex disaggregated.
Improvements to data collection
- More countries are reporting and validating data through the UIS dynamic administrative and finance data templates. By September 2024, 41 countries had joined in, making reporting easier and faster for everyone involved.
- The UIS has also expanded its facilities for gathering national data, now covering 76 countries and territories.
